What Is The Latest Smart Device To Have A Security Flaw?

McAfee Advanced Research Team uncovered a flaw in Wemo Smart Plugs. As previously discussed on the FixMeStick blog, Internet of Things (IoT) devices are notoriously vulnerable. Read on to see if you’re affected.

Wemo Smart Plugs are electric outlets that allow you to control electronic devices remotely from your tablet or smartphone. This is not by magic– they’re linked to your wifi network and this is where the risk lies. If a hacker breached a Smart Plug they’d have access to your entire home network.

The McAfee research team already contacted Belkin about this loophole. But you should take action as well! Here’s what to do:

  • Don’t be caught off guard like the US Air Force and change default passwords on your router. Use a password manager to make this easier. Dashlane generates new complex passwords with one click and you can try it for free here!
  • Run a FixMeStick scan to ensure your home computers haven’t been breached.
  • Create another network for your IoT devices and make sure your devices are up-to-date because these patches can only secure your devices if they’re downloaded.
  • Get over 50% off McAfee Total Protection here! McAfee is a trusted antivirus that encrypts your searches, blocks spam, and is your first line of defense against hackers.
