Have you wondered why your computer starts at a crawl? You might have programs set to begin whenever you start your computer, programs that drastically slow down how quickly your computer starts. You can turn off programs from starting automatically by searching in the start menu for “msconfig,” selecting “Startup,” and then deselecting unwanted programs. Here are step-by-step instructions on how to do this:
- First, press the Windows key and the letter “S” on keyboard at the same time. This will bring up a search menu in which you can type msconfig. Then press enter or click the result “System Configuration.”
- Afterwards, you will see a box with some menu tabs at the top. Select “Startup.”
If you have Windows XP, Vista, or 7, you will then see a list of programs. If you have Windows 8, 8.1, or 10 you will instead see a link to “Open Task Manager” from where you can deselect programs.
- In this list of programs (example below), you can look for suspicious programs that might be slowing down your computer, selecting the suspicious program, and clicking “Disable.” Be sure to check the publisher column to see if the program creator is trustworthy or not. The startup impact also indicates if the program will drastically slow down your computer or not.
