More Ways to Extend the Life of Your Computer

Here at FixMeStick, we pride ourselves on helping you save and maintain your computer, making it last longer so you don’t have to purchase more computers in the long run.

As mentioned in our Earth Day blog, saving your current computer also helps reduce the amount of Electronic waste going into landfills each year. This is a small step you can do to save our planet. That’s why we decided to make a new article with even more ways you can extend the life of your computer.

Choose a Quality Computer

Before you think about extending the life of your current computer, you have to make sure you purchase a quality one first. Not only will a quality computer last longer, you will also run into less problems using it. Checkout this helpful guide from Consumer Reports as your starting point

Some important features you can look into when choosing a new computer is the processor, which is called the CPU, the Hard Drive, and the random access memory, or RAM.

The CPU determines how fast your computer can process a program. The hard drive determines how many applications and files you can store in your computer, while the RAM controls the amount of data your computer can process at a time.

Of course, the better these features are, the better your computer will function and the longer they will last. If you are unable to get better features due to budget restrictions, you can still try out our tips below for more ways to extend the life of your current computer.

Use a StartMeStick

We’ve created StartMeStick as a sister-product to the FixMeStick. The concept is simple – use a StartMeStick to access a private online browser without the inconveniences of a slow computer or operating system.

And the best part? StartMeStick will work even when your computer’s operating system does not. For example, if your computer boots to a blue screen, StartMeStick will allow you to use it once again. It’s a great way to bring your computer back from the dead!

If you are tired of waiting for ages to load online videos, make online purchases, print documents from your computer, or if you are worried about the security and privacy of your internet traffic when you do things like online banking, try a StartMeStick for those activities today!

Internal Maintenance

Internal maintenance involves uninstalling any applications and deleting files you no longer need. Like a good spring cleaning, taking these steps will free up your hard drive as well as your CPU and RAM, making your computer feel like it’s new again.

Free Up Your CPU

To free up the CPU on your computer, start off by pressing the CTRL, ALT, and DELETE keys all at once on your keyboard. Then, click on Task Manager and look for any possible processes that are using extensive CPU. You can click on ‘End Task’ to stop these processes and speed up your CPU.

If you are on a Mac computer, you will have to open your Activity Monitor, which can be found by searching in your Applications list. Here, you can view your CPU usage and kill any unnecessary tasks by clicking on the ‘X’ symbol at the top left-hand corner of the window.

To maintain good CPU performance, make sure you don’t run too many programs at once. Once you close a program, it might be running in the background. You can also use the ‘Task Manager’ once again to end any programs you are not using. You can also use a software such as System Mechanic to improve your CPU performance

Cleanup Your Hard Drive

All Windows computers actually have a Disk Cleanup option built into-it. This feature will delete any temporary files and free up space on the hard drive.

The Disk Cleanup feature can be found by typing its name in your computer’s search bar, but its location will vary depending on which version of Windows software you have. Check out our blog post here for detailed instructions on how to do this.

Unfortunately, this feature is not available on Mac computers, so you can consider manually deleting any unused applications as well as transferring your files and folders to an external hard drive.

Free Up Your RAM

RAM is like CPU. You need enough of it to help your computer function smoothly. You can clear your CPU by opening the Task Manager using the CTRL, ALT, and DELETE keys again. Once there, look for a tab called Memory. This indicates your RAM usage.

Look for any programs and applications that are using an excessive amount of RAM. You can end them or even uninstall these apps if you no longer need them. You can read our blog post here for how to uninstall programs on your computer.

On Mac computers, your RAM information can be found under the Activity Monitor again, but under the Memory tab. You can click on the large ‘X’ at the top left-hand corner of the Activity Monitor window to end unwanted tasks.

External Maintenance

The external components of the computer refers to the monitor, the main tower, the keyboard, the mouse, and an external harddrive if you have one. These components must be taken care of to ensure software can run on your computer without any problems

The best way to maintain the external components is to keep your computer cool. This can be done by unblocking the fans on your computer to get rid of any accumulated dust. You can do this using compressed gas. If your computer is a laptop, make sure to place it on a cool, hard surface where heat can easily dissipate.

Keep It Secure

Keeping your computer secure from external threats can also extend the lifetime of your computer. We recommend running an antivirus program such as McAfee alongside the FixMeStick for added protection.

Antiviruses such as McAfee to protect your computer against live viruses while FixMeStick can find leftover viruses that the antivirus program cannot reach.

And lastly, don’t forget to run a FixMeStick scan as part of your computer maintenance routine! You can try it today!

I recently upgraded my HP mini desktop from a SATA hdd to a Solid State Drive…coupled with an upgrade to 12 gb of memory it is freaky fast…
The results are astounding…it has a new heart and should give me a few more years of service also using FIXMESTICK on a regular basis helps me to keep it clean.

Hi Paul, thanks for sharing this tip with us! I’m sure it will help our blog readers looking to extend the life of their computers.

We may be a bit intimidated with removing the case on a computer. It is a simple task and especially necessary in certain work environments. If you do a lot of computer assisted designing in a space next to where the physical manufacture is carried out, the computer may be susceptible to extra dusts (possibly mixed in with chemical vapors). You may want to watch for deterioration of not just the exterior of the case but also the interior working parts of the computer. It may well affect the operation of the keyboard, mouse and monitor (including the screen, itself). As already stated above, the case is designed to have (relatively pure) air moving through it. We had a computer operating in a heavy paper dust environment. The main fan on the case started to make noises and the fan itself even stopped working at one point. Before you reach that point, again, use the compressed air technique to clean the fan out. If you do this on a timely basis (we learned the hard way – computer survived) you won’t even have to replace the fan at least for awhile.

Hi Bob, thank you for your detailed description of this situation. I’m sure it will make a lot of our blog readers aware that their computer could be collecting more dust than they expect! If you have any other tips, feel free to share them with us as well!

I just renewed my fixmestick until July of 2020. I was supposed to get a confirmation by e-mail confirming my purchase. So far NO response?????

    • Linda -

Hi William, thanks for letting us know! I can confirm your order has been processed and your FixMeStick has been renewed for another year. You should have received an email from support@fixmestick.com. You can also email us using that email address if you have any other questions.

Can a fix me stick be used more than once? or do you have to purchase a new on each time?

    • Linda -

Hi there, to answer your question, the FixMeStick is a subscription-based service. That means you pay per year so you can use it as many times as you like for as long as you have an active subscription. We’ve also reached out to you by email to followup with your question.

I have switched over to using a Chromebook. Could you please give some tips for making Chromebooks last longer? There is no task manager on them and no disk clean up . Thanks in advance.

    • Linda -

Hi Teresa, thanks for letting us know! We have also reached out to you by email from support@fixmestick.com and we will look into tips for Chromebooks in future blogs.

Probably not the best idea to recommend “End Task” for things that are using excessive memory. You have no idea what you are closing and the result can be less than fun. Google Chrome is a typical example with its many instances. My FixMeStick has never found anything and is a real pain to use as I cannot just plug it in and use it. I have to reboot my system repeatedly to get it to work.

    • Linda -

Hi John, thanks for leaving your input. You are right! As a general rule – I would only click on “End Task” for tasks that I suspect are virus-related. If I am not sure, I would also look the task up on Google or ask someone before I end the task. If you are still concerned about your FixMeStick, feel free to contact us at support@fixmestick.com.

    • Linda -

Hi Ruth, yes – when you order a FixMeStick, we will ship a physical USB stick to your address that you can plug into your computer.

I bought FixMeStick years ago with a life time usage. Now it will not work. It will not connect to the internet for updates.

Hi there, sorry to see that you are having internet connection issues with your FixMeStick. We’ve written a guide on how to troubleshoot this which you can find at this link here. If you are still unable to connect to the internet, please send us an email at support@fixmestick.com and we can help you troubleshoot it.

  9. Minoo -

Hi Linda, I am a FixMeStick fan and have been using it for many years. I have an old desk top with Windows XP, recently it has stopped working and has a Blue Screen. Do you think the FixMeStick will be able to fix this problem? Thank you for your help.
    Minoo Engineer

    • Linda -

Hi Minoo, that’s a good question. The FixMeStick is designed to remove viruses so it will not fix this computer with the blue screen. However, we are currently developing a new product that would help with these issues. Please stay tuned to our newsletters over the next few months to find out!

My laptop was attacked by ransomware 3 days ago. The fixmestick did not fix it. I was surprised computer did not boot from stick directly but to Windows XP then I had to select FixmeStick, then it rebooted. Fixmestick found nothing, but computer does not run right. I can’t risk accessing email from that computer, screen comes up and says there is no disk and files load slow and act odd. So I have to use an older, slower computer and can’t risk moving files I need from effected computer. Computer backed up 3 months ago. What do I do now? (Win Xp sp2, Dell M65)

    • Linda -

Hi Peter, the FixMeStick is not 100% effective at dealing with Ransomware, especially if it has encrypted your files. That’s because once files are encrypted, only skilled computer technicians can decode them. You can read more about how to protect yourself from ransomware on our blog linked here. Hope this helps and feel free to email us at support@fixmestick.com if you have any other questions about using your FixMeStick!

  11. ALISON WILSON FREEMAN -

    Hi,
Since Windows 7 will no longer offer updates after Jan 14, I’m considering a Chrome Book because my use on the computer is minimal at best. i use it to look things up on the internet and for email and that’s about it. If I do go with the Chrome Book, will my Fixmestick still work? Thanks so much! I am very happy with the fixmestick and have been for years!

    • Linda -

Hi Alison, thanks for your interest! Unfortunately, the current version of the FixMeStick was not designed to support Chromebook use. Presently, the FixMeStick is optimized for use on both PC and Mac computers, depending on which version of the FixMeStick the customer has (PC vs Mac version).

As Chromebooks become more advanced and receive widespread adoption, we know that there will be an increasing demand for a compatible version of the FixMeStick. Creating this version is definitely something we have on our to-do list, but for the immediate future, we want to focus on our core products.

    Hi,
I was thinking of getting a Notebook, but can I use the Fix-Me-Stick with it?
I have a lifetime for 3 computers with Fix-Me-Stick. Thank you, Laurie

    • Linda -

Hi Laurie, I am assuming by Notebook, you are talking about the foldable computers that have a screen attached to the keyboard. These computers come in either PC or Mac versions. If you purchase one made by Apple, then it’s a Mac. And yes, you can use your FixMeStick on these Notebook computers.

  13. Marion Foster -

I run my FixMeStick on my Lenovo laptop, Windows 7. Can I also run it on my HP tablet, Windows 10?

    • Linda -

Hi Mario, Unfortunately, the current version of the FixMeStick was not designed to support tablet use. Click here for details on how to manually clear settings on your tablet.

  14. Diane O'Connell -

Just wondering if you would ever create both the FixMeStick and StartMeStick for phones (Android and/or Apple). I use my phone for EVERYTHING!! If you made on for the Android based phone, I would buy in a heartbeat!!!

    • Linda -

Hi Diane, thanks for reading our blog! Although we don’t have a smartphone or tablet version of our FixMeStick right now, it may be something we’ll look into developing in the future. Feel free to stay tuned to our newsletters for our latest updates.
