FixMeTip: How to Keep Kids Safe & Secure Online

As all parents know, parenting is a 24 hour job. Your children and grandchildren are pretty much the most important people in your life. This week’s FixMeTip will teach you how to extend your care to the web too!

First, for those of you who are hooked on Apple products, these instructions will enable you to restrict what your kids can do when they grab your laptop, iPad, or iPhone:

  1. Click on the Apple menu and select “System Preferences”.
  2. Click on “Parental Controls” under the “Systems” subheading.
  3. Select the user you whose settings you would like to edit. You should see various tabs for types of controls. Under “Web”, you can limit the websites this user has access to.

Make sure to click on the lock icon to prevent others from changing these settings back!

For our PC users, you can turn on “Parental Controls” by searching for it using the “Search” function.

Alternatively, you can open “Control Panel” and click on “Parental Controls”.

Next choose your child’s account and “Allow” or “Block” specific programs or websites. You can even set limits on how long they can use the computer!

If you have any qualms about whether or not to set up some limits on your child’s online time, you can read more about the topic here. And be sure to check out this handy guide!

As always, stay safe out there!
