Well folks, it’s 2017! As we move through January, don’t lose sight of your New Year’s resolutions– and consider adding this one to your list. This year, FixMeStick challenges you to make this the year you set up a password manager.
We’ve said before that creating strong passwords is important. As is changing those strong passwords to keep scammers on their toes. But can you really be expected to remember to switch all those tricky passwords every couple months? (It’s okay– neither can we).
Which is why you need to setup a password manager.
Once you setup an account, a password manager will genuinely make your life a lot easier and more secure. You’ll only need to remember one long and strong password and you won’t have to go through a bunch of resets. A password manager will protect your passwords by scrambling them with an encryption algorithm. Only you can decrypt and access your information with the factors you choose. This application will then auto-save and enter your passwords on all your favorite sites, so you don’t have to.
There are lots to choose from, but we recommend LastPass or TrueKey. This author chose these options because they are easy to use with a handful of extra features and it is accessible to all (a Premium membership runs you about $12 a year, for either of these choices). For our readers who prefer a Mac computer, check out 1Password.
But you should know that password managers are not perfect. It does centralize your information and security breaches have happened. But getting a password manager will still help you hedge your bets in terms of security.
