FixMeTip: Energy Savers

Did you know, 50 millions computers (that’s 423 000 tons of junk) are trashed each year in the US? Even more atrocious is the fact that less than half of these are recycled properly. While it is true that some of these computers are real duds, there are certainly some steps you can take at home to help you keep that computer in working order– and reduce e-waste in the process.

Turn electronics off.

It might be tempting to simply close your laptop instead of fully shutting it off– after all it saves time later– but this habit is bad for your computer as well as your energy bill! Most people don’t know that even when a computer is in sleep mode, it’s using power. Shutting your computer completely off when you are not using it also helps your computer run better in the long term.

Keep it Clean.
By maintaining the security of your computer, you’re actually helping to increase the lifespan of your computer. Don’t take a risk by letting viruses slow you down. Malware and viruses place more stress on your computer’s processor and can contribute to overheating. If you’re not running regular FixMeStick scans, or updating your antivirus program, you might have to replace your computer earlier than expected. Not only is this costly, it’s environmentally wasteful!
