Cyber Safe for the Holidays!

The holidays can be a stressful time and we don’t need viruses and malware adding to that stress! But as always, FixMeStick is here to show you how easy it can be to stay safe during the holiday season.

Who wants to trudge through the mall and fight crowds for deals when shopping for presents? Shopping online is just so much easier and quicker. Plus you can do it from home with a cup of hot cocoa in front of the fireplace! We here at FixMeStick could not agree more but you do have to be careful.

Firstly, when purchasing something from a webstore, look at the URL (that is the website’s address, like www.fixmestick.com/store). What you are looking for is a little lock right before the URL and the URL should begin with https:// That lock and the https means the webpage is verified and secure. This extra security means you can go ahead and feel confident entering in your payment information on the store’s virtual checkout.

Here are a few examples of what that lock could look like on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge or Safari.

Secondly, the best part of online shopping is you can do it from your desk at work or from your couch at home. But really, the places from where you do your online shopping should be limited to home and work. This is because your internet at home and work is almost certainly a secure network. Public networks, for example at the library, in a cafe or on even on the train are often less secure and far easier to hack. If hacked while you are connected, a thief could take your payment information. It’s always best to make purchases when in a secure place!

If you are going to be online shopping on your smart phone, consider only using the shopping apps provided by companies such as Amazon, Ebay or other online retailers. These apps are secure and provide extra security while shopping from anywhere.

Furthermore, only shop on websites you know and trust. These websites will only ever need your payment and shipping information. Anything that asks for personal banking information, social security information or anything that seems too personal is not good! You never need to provide your passport information just to buy some holiday PJs online!

Furthermore, the holiday season always sees a spike in credit card theft, so always be diligent and check your statements. Another solution could be to consider using PayPal. PayPal is a payment system that adds a level of security when online shopping. Most major retailers accept PayPal payments (including FixMeStick!), so why not give it a try?

By following these easy steps, you can save time by online shopping and have more time for what’s really important this holiday season: spending time with the family, enjoying the winter weather and simply relaxing!
